The Labour Party won an outright majority – the first party to achieve this in New Zealand since 1996, when the voting system changed.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“Compared to even the most optimistic predictions, this is a remarkable victory. New Zealand has shown the Labour Party its greatest support in almost 50 years. This is a massive endorsement and we offer our fullest congratulations to Prime Minister Ardern – she is a shining example for the socialist and social democratic family across the globe.

“This result was built on the winning combination of courageous and compassionate leadership, and an ambitious and truly progressive political programme. Through a terrorist attack, a natural disaster and now a global pandemic, Prime Minister Ardern has led New Zealand with determination, kindness and compassion. Voters have rewarded this and backed the Labour Party’s vision to move New Zealand forward.

“As socialists and democrats around the world work for a more sustainable and fairer society for all, we look forward to continuing and strengthening our bonds with Prime Minister Ardern and the New Zealand Labour Party.”
