On 3 July, the German Bundestag adopted a new Minimum Wage Bill, fulfilling an important election pledge of the SPD. Our German Social Democrat member party had made this legislation a core condition of the coalition agreement with their partners in Government. Sigmar Gabriel, Vice-Chancellor and SPD leader hailed the moment as “a historic day” for Germany, and a sign of “great social progress”.

The Party of European Socialists today elected Martin Schulz as their candidate to be the next President of the European Commission, kicking off the campaign to win Europe’s top job for the social democratic political family.


“When I am President of the European Commission, I pledge to live up to the trust that you have given me”. This was Martin Schulz’ open statement to a packed hall of SPD supporters in Berlin this Sunday. Earlier, Schulz had received overwhelming backing from the congress delegates with 97.3% backing him as their lead candidate for the European elections in May.
