Responding to the developments today at the EU Council, the Party of European Socialists (PES) President, Sergei Stanishev, has said that the delay in securing an agreement on the EU budget; “Will be worth the wait if we remember that the single biggest priority is ‘continent-wide’ economic recovery in Europe”.

22/10/2012 PES congratulates the Czech Social Democratic Party on victory in regional and senatorial elections
The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the historic victory of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) in the regional and senatorial elections held in the Czech Republic in the last weeks. On October 12 and 13, the ČSSD won the largest share of the vote in the majority of the regions – 30.37 percent of the overall votes –, and led to a clear victory of the left in the traditionally conservative Senate. This support was amplified in the second round of the senatorial elections on October 19 and 20 with a constitutional majority of 46 seats out of 81. This result makes the PES member party the strongest political force in the upper chamber of the Czech Parliament.
18/10/2012 PES Prime Ministers and Presidents call on EU summit to honour June pledge for more jobs and growth
“To have credibility with the citizens of Europe we must follow through on our commitments” says Stanishev. Meeting to prepare positions ahead of today’s European Summit, the Party of European Socialists’ Prime Ministers and Heads of State, have called for pledges for more European solidarity ‘to be honoured’. The meeting participants, who included French PresidentFrançois Hollande, called for a swifter implementation of the Compact for Growth and Jobs agreed in June. The push comes after increasing frustration from progressive party leaders that the timetable on the jobs and growth deal were slipping.

Meeting at the Party of European Socialists (PES) headquarters in Brussels, PES Secretary General Achim Post and the leader of the Israeli Labor Party Shelly Yachimovichdiscussed the social dimension of the crisis in both Israel and Europe. The meeting came as the Israeli Government announced snap General elections ‘as soon as possible’.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates the former President of SerbiaBoris Tadić (and current leader of the Serbian Democratic Party) and the President of CroatiaIvo Josipović on being awarded the European Medal of Tolerance. The aim of the prize is to honour extraordinary achievements of tolerance and political reconciliation in Europe. Both leaders are actively involved in the work of the PES.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the victory of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) of Montenegro in yesterday’s parliamentary elections. The “Coalition for a European Montenegro”, formed by the SDP and the DPS – both of them associate parties of the PES – won the elections with strong popular support.
10/10/2012 PES welcomes French President and Austrian Chancellor call for European Youth Guarantee funded by Financial Transaction Tax
The Party of European Socialists (PES) has strongly welcomed the calls by French President François Hollande and Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann for a European Youth Guarantee. The two leaders, meeting in Paris yesterday, have said that the funding of the Guarantee scheme could be through a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT). This call follows on from the significant step yesterday (9 October) towards an FTT, as 11 Eurozone Member States agreed to push for the tax through ‘enhanced cooperation’. The French and Austrian leaders have called for a percentage of the FTT to help establish a "fund for education" within the EU budget. Welcoming the call, PES President Sergei Stanishev stated that; “Today’s declaration of support for a European Youth Guarantee, by President Hollande and Chancellor Faymann, is a great advance for Europe’s youth. It shows that the commitment of the Party of European Socialists (PES) to helping young people overcome the scourge of unemployment is at the highest level of importance. Advocating the use of the Financial Transaction Tax to fund this Youth Guarantee is strongly supported by the PES”. Mr. Stanishev added that; “this announcement is a clear sign that coordination within our political family is working well, and that the PES is clearly focussed on the needs of the millions of ordinary people who have suffered from the economic crisis”. Today’s announcement is another success for the PES campaign for a European Youth Guarantee, and follows on from the recent commitment by Irish Social Protection Minister, Joan Burton, to make the establishment of a European Youth Guarantee a priority when the Irish Government takes up the EU Presidency next year. The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, and the PES General Secretary, Achim Post, will join Chancellor Faymann at the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) conference in Vienna this Saturday (13th October).
01/10/2012 PES Congress welcomes Latvian Concord Party as new member
The PES Congress ratified last Saturday the observer membership of the Latvian Harmony Party. The green light came one year after the elections gave the strongest parliamentary presence to the progressive bloc currently in opposition.
