20/03/2014 PES leaders promise new industrialisation and social recovery
Leaders of the member parties of the Party of European Socialists (PES) met in Brussels for the final time before the European Parliament elections today. At a preparatory meeting for the European Council Summit, they focused on the key challenge for the next five years - translating a fragile economic recovery into a full social recovery.

In New York, PES Women builds bridges between local communities and international decision-makers. On Wednesday 19 March at 18.00 in the UN headquarters in New York, PES Women and Vision Films presented the film "The Threshold of the Desert", followed by a debate on women’s empowerment with the participation of representatives from UN Women, UNPD and the civil society.
20/03/2014 PES Family ensures banking union deal protects citizens
After a long series of negotiations, representatives of the European Council and the European Parliament, headed by S&D MEP Elisa Ferreira reached a strong deal on the banking union early this morning. The negotiators agreed that the cost of an ailing bank should be covered by the banking sector itself, and that taxpayers should no longer have to carry the burden of the excess of the unbridled financial sector.

17/03/2014 PES denounces illegal referendum in Crimea
Yesterday the 16th of March a referendum was organized in Crimea where voters could chose between joining Russia, or the return of Ukraine to its status under the 1992 constitution, which would give the region much more autonomy. There was no option for those who wanted the constitution to remain unchanged. According to exit polls, 96% of Crimean voters chose to join Russia.

On Sunday 16 March, PES Ministers of Foreign Affairs came together to discuss the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council. Among the issues discussed were the latest developments in Ukraine, including the unconstitutional referendum in Crimea and the sanctions imposed by the EU, and consequences for the Eastern Partnership.

Party of European Socialists (PES) candidate for European Commission President, Martin Schulz, will today attend a progressive political rally outside Athens, Greece. The rally comes one week after he was elected PES Common Candidate at the PES Congress in Rome.
