The Party of European Socialists warmly congratulates SPD candidate Olaf Scholz on his election as the new Chancellor of Germany. The PES believes his election and the new SPD-led German government – the first one with as many women as men – marks a new stage for Germany and for Europe.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“The formation of a progressive government in Germany marks the beginning of a new cycle. Germany and Europe can now move forward towards social fairness and environmental sustainability, through a strong and ambitious wave of investment. The green transition is an opportunity to modernise our societies and to rebuild them to make them more just.

“This is also a clear signal that voters know what they want and that the social democratic political family can deliver those policies, when given the opportunity to lead. We have always been a pivotal political force in Europe and we always will be”, Stanishev added.

Sergei Stanishev has sent a congratulations letter to the newly elected German Chancellor on behalf of the Party of the European Socialists.

The whole PES family is looking forward to welcoming Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the PES Council in Brussels, on 16 December. Scholz and SPD won the Federal Election in September with 25.7% of the vote.
