After many years of conservative politics ruling Australia voters have finally had enough, booting out Scott Morrison’s scandal laden administration. The election of the Australian Labor Party’s Anthony Albanese has been welcomed by world leaders and civil society advocates who see this as the moment to achieve transformational change in the Indo-Pacific region on climate, trade, and a slew of issues.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“On behalf of the PES I welcome the election successes of our Australian friends, Mr Albanese and the entire Australian Labor Party has shown that centre-left ideas, social democracy is not only needed, but wanted around the world to answer the problems of today.

“Now Anthony Albanese joins Prime Minister Jacinda Arden as one of the leaders of the progressive Pacific taking shape. Their work and the work of untold activists and leaders across the region is what will build a better world today and continue the red surge taking place across the globe.”

Following his victory, Mr Albanese said: "My Labor team will work every day to bring Australians together. And I will lead a government worthy of the people of Australia". He will now fly immediately to Tokyo to join the quadrilateral summit between the US, Japan, Australia and India.

These victories in Australia continue 2022’s global trend of progressive election successes. From Europe to Australia, progressive ideas are solving problems and changing politics.
