The PES is shocked by the brutal suppression, by Iranian authorities, of peaceful nationwide protests that have erupted following the death of a woman arrested by Iran's so-called morality police.

Mahsa Amini, 22, died on Friday, days after eyewitnesses said she was beaten in a police van in Tehran. Her death is yet another tragic example of violence against women, which millions of women across the globe face every day.

The news from Iran shows the brutality of the regime. The toll of people killed or injured in the protests is rising by the minute, and authorities are limiting access to the internet throughout the country.

The Party of European Socialists strongly condemns the abuse of force by the authorities and expresses its solidarity with the brave women and men who are being subjected to violence for demanding freedom and equality.

The regime does not want the world to see the bloodbath and the people's resistance. The PES urges people to spread the message of the Iranian people: they must not be abandoned.
