The campaign to have voters decide who will be the next Commission President yesterday received very strong backing from the French President Francois Hollande. In an article in Le Monde, Hollande stated that: "On 25th May, your vote will determine who the next President of the European Commission will be".

Speaking after the latest TV debate with his main opponent, PES candidate for Commission President Martin Schulz called the public declaration by the French President "a major boost for European democracy".

"On the eve of Europe Day, this very public commitment by Francois Hollande is precisely what European voters want to hear. No ambiguity, no hesitation -  the message is clear - the voters should be the ones who decide who runs the European Union', stated the PES candidate.

In a campaign that is daily gaining momentum, Mr. Schulz will today meet Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi ahead of the next TV debate between the four leading candidates.
