PES President welcomes Dilma Rousseff's re-election as President of Brazil

The Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev offered today its warm congratulations to Dilma Vana Rousseff for her re-election for a second term as President of Brazil. Ms Rousseff, who has been in power since 2010, was re-elected yesterday with 51.6% of the vote.

PES President Sergei Stanishev stated: “Dilma's re-election is a ringing endorsement of her commitment to progress and social change. Thanks to her strong leadership and sound progressive values, millions of people have been lifted out of poverty in Brazil. This is what democracy should be about and, for the past four years, Dilma has repeatedly proven it: her government's welfare programmes are the living example that every modern country should follow a 'leave no man behind' policy. Europe has a lot to learn from Dilma, and I am glad that she will be in power for another four years to show us the path”.

During her victory speech, President Rousseff highlighted the importance of dialogue between all sectors, unity and 'the search for a better future'.
