Joseph Muscat

Joseph Muscat was born on 22 January 1974. He has a Master of Arts in European Studies (University of Malta) and a Ph.D in Management Research from the University of Bristol. Joseph Muscat worked as a journalist and as an editor from 1992 to 2004; with a break in his journalist career in 1998-1999 when he became Market Intelligence Manager for the Institute for the Promotion of Small Enterprises. He engaged in the Labour Youth Forum and from 1994-1997 he was its Financial Secretary. In 1997 he became Deputy Chaiman of the Labour Youth Forum. From 1994 to 2001 he was member of the National Executive of the Malta Labour Party and then became Member of the Administration of the party as Education Secretary. During the European elections of 2004 he was elected MEP, fulfilling his mandate until mid-2008, when he was elected leader of the Malta Labour Party. In October 2008 he returned to the Maltese Parliament as an MP and he became leader of the Maltese opposition.
