Helle Thorning-Schmidt

Helle Thorning-Schmidt was born on 14 December 1966 in Rødovre, a suburb south west of Copenhagen. She spent her childhood and adolescence nearby in the town of Ishøj. She now lives in the area of Østerbro with her husband Stephen Kinnock and their 5 and 8 year old daughters. Her political spirit grew as she conducted anti-bullying campaigns and pupil council work in school. She moved to Copenhagen as she started her political science studies at the University of Copenhagen. In 1993, she joined the Social Democratic Party. She was employed as EU consultant by the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions in 1997, and in 1999 she was elected Member of the European Parliament, an office she served until the end of her first term in June 2004. She was elected member of the Danish Parliament on 8 February 2005. On 12 April 2005 through a membership ballot executed within the Danish Social Democratic Party Ms. Thorning-Schmidt was elected first female leader of the Social Democratic Party. Following the elections of September 2011, Helle Thorning-Schmidt became the first female Prime Minister of Denmark.
