PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“I’m glad that my good friend Achim was able to secure a direct mandate from the German electors in his district of Minden-Lübbecke. This is proof that citizens appreciate his proximity and good work over the past years, that they feel well represented by him. His direct mandate also contributed to securing a comfortable ten-seat lead by the SPD, now the biggest party in the Bundestag with 206 MPs, after a powerful campaign for progressive change and respect for everyone. This campaign reflected our core principles and constitutes a great collective victory for Achim, the SPD, Olaf Scholz and the whole PES family.
“I look forward to continuing our work with the SPD – a party with one and a half centuries of history and over 400,000 members, and a pillar of European construction – with Achim, and in close cooperation with the SPD leadership in Berlin.”
Achim Post was Deputy Secretary General of the SPD between 2002 and 2012, when he became Secretary General of the Party of European Socialists. Since 2017, he has been deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, focused on Europe, budget and finance.
