European cohesion policy is one of the most successful tools for bridging inequalities within and between the EU’s countries and regions. Yet the draft budget proposes a cut in the Cohesion Fund of 45% in comparison to the 2014-2020 budget, itself a reduction compared to the previous period, according to the European Parliament’s calculations.
PES president Sergei Stanishev said:
“I welcome the budget’s proposed emphasis on youth policies, which is long overdue. Investing in children and young people is a PES priority, as expressed by our Youth Plan, and we are pleased to see that this campaign has had an effect.
“But I regret that cohesion and agriculture policy are proposed for cuts. Striving for more cohesion and equality is at the core of the European project. Nobody should be left behind in either urban or rural areas.
“In a Europe that is facing new challenges and that has expressed clear ambitions to make a difference to its citizens, it is hard to understand why the Commission would put such a large real-terms cut on the table. The Council and the Parliament must now discuss how to give Europe the means it needs to match its ambitions.”
The PES strongly supports the joint resolution of S&D, EPP, ALDE, and Greens/EFA groups in the European Parliament, demanding a responsible approach by the Council on the 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework and own resources.
