With 14% of votes, the Parti Socialiste-Place Publique list led by Raphaël Glucksmann obtained a remarkable result in the European elections. With the unexpected legislative elections happening in less than five days, PES calls social-democratic voters in France to reiterate their trust in a social, ecological and pro-European programme and to stand united against the far-right, by supporting the New Popular Front.
Faced with the imminent threat of the far-right getting into power, Parti Socialiste and Place Publique together with the French left have put forward a joint programme for social and environmental action which is pro-European, based on wage increases, a speeding up for the green transition, investment in public services, the unconditional support for Ukraine and a renewed fight against antisemitism and all forms of racism.
PES President Stefan Lövfen said:
“In the last European elections, a significant part of French voters supported the list led by Raphaël Glucksmann PS-Place Publique and were convinced by our social-democratic project.
“The programme of the common front offers a real alternative. It reflects the values Raphaël and the whole list promoted during the European elections’ campaign, with very clear pro-European, social and sustainable measures. For Europe to be strong and to meet today’s challenges, its second largest country cannot be left to racist, nationalists who want to destroy it.“
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck added:
“Faced with the risk that the far-right Rassemblement National takes power in France, I commend the great responsibility of Parti Socialiste leader Olivier Faure, for the energy he dedicated to building a new common popular front with the French left. Olivier, Raphaël, we stand with you!“
On 30 June and 7 July French citizens will be called to vote for their constituency’s representative at the National Assembly after the French President called snap elections. The PES firmly stands by the progressive forces in the battle between democracy, human rights and social justice and the reactionary, discriminatory and dangerous project of the French far-right.
