PES welcomes the outcome of the United Nations (UN) Summit for the Future, held in New York in the past two days as part of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
During this summit, heads of state and government adopted the Pact for the Future, which will address pressing international issues, accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and revive multilateralism through the reforms of various parts of the UN system. Some of the key issues addressed include the role of Future Generations, youth engagement, education as well as Emergency Platform, Global Digital Compact, Reform of the International Financial Architecture, Integrity of Public Information, New Agenda for Peace (NA4P) and UN 2.0.
PES President Stefan Löfven, who as a former Prime Minister of Sweden was appointed in 2022 by the UN Secretary-General to co-lead a High-level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism, contributed to the preparation of the UN’s Summit of the Future.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Over the past year and a half, I have been working closely with the rest of the High-level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism (HLAB). We have identified six transformational shifts in global governance that will help deliver on the most urgent challenges the world is facing today in peace and security, the triple planetary crisis, growing economic inequalities, and a widening digital divide.”
“In order to deliver the objectives, set in the Pact for the Future, we need inclusive, bold and concrete actions. Together with our parties and partners, we are fully committed to working closely to achieve these objectives and revive multilateralism. Our dedication to these objectives is unwavering.”
The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the initiative taken by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, towards a robust multilateral framework to boost peace and security as well as the extraordinary work delivered by the co-facilitators, Germany and Namibia.
