The 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, taking place from 30 June to 3 July in Seville under the leadership of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is a key moment to advance global economic justice. This summit is a crucial opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism and to push forward the reform of international financial architecture. In times of increasing global uncertainty, it is more important than ever to deliver on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to promote stability, and to build fair and resilient societies.
We commend Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for his leadership in promoting genuine partnerships based on dialogue, mutual respect, and shared objectives.
We also welcome the presence and contribution of the President of the European Council António Costa and strongly support UN Secretary-General António Guterres for his tireless work in advancing global stability and sustainable development.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Development is essential for regional and global stability. It must remain one of our top priorities to promote peace worldwide. Global security is not only about weapons; it is about stability, cooperation, and shared progress. While the EU cannot fully replace the financial leadership which was previously led by the United States, it must step up as a global leader, capable of addressing crises and driving forward lasting solutions. We must reinforce our humanitarian and development commitments. It is both the moral and strategic thing to do. We commend Spain’s leadership and long-standing commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian action at EU level.”
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck added:
“This conference is not only about development. It is about defending the very idea of international cooperation. At a time when the far-right threatens to undermine multilateralism and global solidarity, we stand with those who believe in shared progress and justice across borders.
We saw it in the Plenary of the European Parliament in June where the far-right supported by the EPP blocked the report on financing for development ahead of this UN Conference which should have called on member states to increase their commitment to international development cooperation. Europe must remain a global leader for cooperation and deliver strong actions that reflects its commitment to the SDGs and achieve its external actions objectives.”
The PES stands ready to support this renewed global effort for development, partnership, and peace.
