The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the European Commission’s proposal for a 2040 climate target of 90% net greenhouse gas emissions reduction, compared to 1990 levels. The 2040 climate target has been long-awaited and is a key step for our political family and our goals towards strengthening the path to sustainable competitiveness and decarbonisation, drive renewables, support the just transition for our people, workers, and industries, and to reach the 2050 climate neutrality goal.

PES President Stefan Löfven said:

”Achieving climate neutrality remains paramount to our political family. While attention from climate change has shifted towards other topics in the media sphere in recent years, climate change is very much still here, and we will continue to feel the effects of it if we do not take action.

The PES therefore welcomes the Commission’s proposal to cut EU greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040.

With an established 2040 climate target, we can work to promote a decarbonised, healthy planet, drive investments in renewable energy, boost the sustainable competitiveness of SMES and industries, create just green jobs for our workers, and mitigate the devastating impacts of global warming.

We remain fully committed to achieving climate neutrality and to clearing the smog of disinformation propagated by the far-right which has polluted the discourse around environmentalism. It is our responsibility to leave a healthy and habitable world to the generations that will come after us.”
