Sergei Stanishev said after the meeting:
‘I wanted to congratulate Jeremy Corbyn in person on his massive success. He has inspired tens of thousands of people in the UK to join the socialist movement. They were inspired by his messages of hope, solidarity and his strong anti-austerity position. I look forward to working with him to have these values reflected in Europe, his will be a vital contribution.
Next year the UK will decide whether or not to stay a member of the European Union. This is a profound decision. He and I agree that the best way to change the EU is to be in, and to be active. This Labour party conference has seen a authentic conversation with party members. New life has been breathed into the party.
The PES will cooperate closely with the Labour party on the EU referendum – according to their strategy. We are fully committed to their fight to keep Britain in the European Union. Ahead of that I have invited Jeremy Corbyn to Paris on 21 October 2015 to discuss with other socialist leaders from across Europe, the Paris climate summit – COP21.’
