PES President Sergei Stanishev said “After their stunning election results in May, electing the PD to this post sends a strong message to Europe. Gianni Pittella will be an excellent leader of the Group, bringing his long experience of the Parliament, where he was first elected in 1999.”
Pittella has stated that his focus will be on solidarity across Europe, and fighting against the inequalities that persist after the economic crisis of recent years. With Pittella leading the S&D Group in the Parliament, and his party leader Matteo Renzi in charge of the Council for the next six months, we expect to see great synergies between the two institutions and concrete results for Europe’s citizens.
