PES President Sergei Stanishev expressed his satisfaction with the results, pointing out that; “this result underlines the voters’ endorsement of the progressive policies presented by the SDP and DPS. Thanks to the outgoing progressive government, Montenegro has become one of the major actors in the opening negotiations to EU accession. Today, it is a role model for the whole Western Balkan region”.
Mr. Stanishev added: “The PES looks forward to four more years of progressive coalition, not only to ensure the continuity and achievements of the previous mandate but also to accomplish the necessary reforms for the country as it works towards European integration. Yesterday’s elections have made it clear: Montenegro must keep up the good work”.
The PES remains fully committed to the enlargement process towards the Western Balkans through the organisation of various initiatives such its yearly Balkan Conference, its Task Force on Western Balkan Enlargement and its regular delegations in the Balkan countries. At the last Brussels Congress, the PES held a meeting bringing together party leaders from the Balkan region, PES President Sergei Stanishev, S&D Group President Hannes Swoboda and Enlargement Commissioner Fule.
