Katarina Barley is Vice-President of the European Parliament and a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and an alternate member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. In the 2019 European elections, she ran as the lead candidate for her party, the SPD. Previously, she was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013 to 2019. During this time, she served as Secretary General of the SPD, Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Acting Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, as well as Federal Minister of Justice and for Consumer Protection. Before her time in politics, she worked as a lawyer, research assistant at the Federal Constitutional Court, and judge at the Trier Regional Court and Wittlich District Court. Social justice, democracy, and the rule of law as well as a social Europe are core themes of Katarina Barley’s politics.
