The Progressive Alliance and the Party of European Socialists ,in cooperation with the S&D Group in the European Parliament and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, organised a two-day seminar in Washington this week to exchange views on these trends and discuss how to counter them.
Twenty representatives from five continents took part in the programme. Delegations met with progressive leaders in the United States, including Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
On Monday 19 June, Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Washington organized a public event in the building of the trade union AFL-CIO, on the theme ‘Quest for a new progressive vision in an era of populism and fake news’.
The debate was moderated by Marije Laffeber, PES deputy secretary general. Speakers were:

- Josef Weidenholzer MEP, vice-president of the S&D Group in the European Parliament
- Carolynn McDonald, senior strategist at 76 Words
- Karine Jean-Pierre, senior adviser and national spokesperson of MoveOn.org
