PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
"This was an appalling attack by people who want to return the country to its dark past.
“We stand in full solidarity with our comrades in the trade union movement. Attempts to intimidate them are completely unacceptable. The work of CGIL for a more democratic Italy and a better future for workers will continue. The workers’ movement will never give in to this right-wing violence.
“It is clear that far-right and neo-fascist groups are behind this attack on CGIL and the violence we saw elsewhere in Rome. This must not go unpunished, those responsible must face the full force of the law.”
On Saturday a far-right mob marched through the streets of Rome to protest public health measures put in place to combat the coronavirus pandemic. As well as attacking the CGIL – one of Italy's oldest and biggest trade unions – the extremist protesters also attempted to reach the office of Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
