PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“Congratulations to Dimitar Kovacevski on his great result – 37,649 out of 44,406 votes across the SDSM members. He has the opportunity to bring new energy to the coalition talks in North Macedonia and hopefully he will be the new prime minister of the country. We are looking forward to our future cooperation with Dimitar and the SDSM.
I would like to thank sincerely the former prime minister and leader of SDSM, Zoran Zaev, who started the real progressive change in North Macedonia and who did the impossible to bring his country closer to the EU membership. It was a privilege working with him.”
The Social Democratic Union (SDSM) in North Macedonia is a PES associated member party. Its former leader Zoran Zaev resigned as prime minister after social democrats suffered a defeat in the local elections in October.
