Following the failure of the leading party VMRO-DPMNE to form a government before the legal deadline, President Gjorge Ivanov must now give the mandate to SDSM, which won the second-largest share of the vote in the recent elections.
PES president Sergei Stanishev said:
“The time has come for Macedonia to have an inclusive government. The leading party has failed to deliver it, and according to the country’s own constitutional rules the mandate must now pass to the second-largest party.
“SDSM is a reforming, competent and pro-European party which won strong support from Macedonian voters in the recent elections. A progressive social democratic government is exactly what the country needs and I call on President Ivanov to implement the constitution accordingly.”
