The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the Romanian Parliament’s approval of the government led by Luca Niculescu, with the participation of its member party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
The PSD will hold 11 ministerial posts and play a central role in shaping the government’s response to Romania’s social and economic challenges.
After months of political uncertainty, Romania needs a fully functioning government that protects living standards and rebuilds economic confidence. The priorities outlined by PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu include securing funding for hospitals and local authorities, settling outstanding payments to businesses, supporting industry and small and medium-sized enterprises, and reforming public administration to reduce waste. Sorin Grindeanu has stressed that reducing the deficit remains an important objective but must be achieved without new austerity measures.
PES Vice-President Victor Negrescu said:
“People in Romania need certainty about their future: decent wages, pensions they can live on, quality healthcare and opportunities for the next generation. This government must turn the page on political uncertainty and deliver concrete improvements in their daily lives.
The PSD has a central responsibility in this effort. Restoring public finances must go hand in hand with funding hospitals, supporting local communities, and helping businesses invest and create jobs. Reducing waste and making public spending more effective must be part of the solution. Working families and vulnerable citizens cannot be asked to pay for another round of austerity.
A strong Romania belongs at the heart of a strong Europe. European funding and investment must reach our communities, create quality jobs, and help rebuild trust through results.”
The PES stands alongside the PSD in advancing these priorities and calls on democratic, pro-European forces to work constructively to deliver lasting stability and social progress.
