The fall of Berlin Wall, “a democratic domino effect that changed the lives of millions of Europeans“, says PES President

PES Secretary General Achim Post participated in the Bundestag’s anniversary weekend, pointing out that; “we are not only celebrating the fall of the wall but also the rise of democracy and human rights in a united Europe. Yesterday, thousands gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate to commemorate this pivotal moment in our history”.

PES President Sergei Stanishev stated: “The fall of the Berlin Wall was a democratic domino effect that changed the lives of millions of citizens across Europe, from Berlin to Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Its significance goes beyond the German reunification: it paved the way for the European Union and a new era of social democracy. Nowadays, segments of the wall are all over the continent, reminding us how closely connected we are to one another. These pieces of history are a promise of peace, diversity and progress for all in Europe”.
