The one-to-one meeting took place less than two weeks before the full meeting of the High-Level Working Group on the Future of the EU, scheduled for 26 September and hosted by the Party of European Socialists, of which Commissioner Crețu is a member.
Sergei Stanishev said:
“Commissioner Crețu and the PES share political priorities: to make Europe work for its citizens across the entire Union, west and east. For us, social progress and economic development go hand in hand. We agree on the need for action to fight poverty, promote equality, improve young people’s prospects and ensure that all workers benefit from social protections.
“The future of the European Union hangs in the balance. That’s why we convened the High-Level Working Group on the Future of the EU, to bring together representatives from across our political family who can steer Europe towards a progressive future. The future of Europe must be social.”
Mr Stanishev also holds regular discussions with other European Commissioners from the PES political family, and in June he led a delegation to present Jean-Claude Juncker with the PES vision for the future of Europe.
