PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“Today’s vote cements the PES’s role as a constructive pro-European force in the parliament.
“We will ensure the institution remains a strong and democratic voice as we work collectively across the chamber to address the difficult tests facing Europe.
“Our political family stands ready to progress the future social and climate legislation which our continent needs to ensure a positive future for all.
“On behalf of the PES family, I would like to congratulate my colleague David Sassoli on receiving the endorsement of MEPs to become the next president of the European Parliament. He is a dedicated pro-European and progressive who will bring a wealth of experience to the position of president.”
The progressive candidate for EP president won 345 votes in the second round of balloting. The closest rivals were Jan Zahradil (ECR) with 160 votes and Ska Keller (Greens/EFA) with 119 votes.
Europe will only be stronger if the parliament is stronger and is able to play an important role in addressing climate change, social justice, economic growth, employment rights, quality jobs, and equality and inclusion for all. David-Maria Sassoli was elected on a pledge to make a difference by bringing MEPs from across the chamber together in the spirit of democracy to address these tests, strengthen democracy, and build citizen’s trust in the institutions.
