The conference – From Gothenburg to Porto: The Path Towards a Social Europe – will bring together prime ministers, ministers, Members of the European Parliament, trade unionists and workers from essential sectors for a discussion on an ambitious social agenda for Europe.
The event will take place live at the Terminal de Cruzeiros, Porto and will be livestreamed in English, Portuguese, French, German and Spanish (18:00 – 20:00 Porto time / 19:00 – 21:00 Brussels time). More information can be found on the Facebook event page.
PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“This is an important moment, not just for the socialist family, but for all of Europe. The Porto Summit, an initiative of Prime Minister Antonio Costa and the Portuguese presidency, is an opportunity to embed the social rights agenda into Europe’s recovery and long-term future.
“The proclamation of the European Pillar of Social rights, hosted by Stefan Löfven in Gothenburg in 2017, was an important step. European Commissioner Nicolas Schmit built on that foundation with the Social Pillar Action Plan. And our colleagues in the Socialist and Democrat Group have been leading the fight for stronger social rights in the European Parliament.
“Now, I am proud that the socialist and democratic family is coming together before the Porto Summit to set out our vision for more equality and fairness, a society of wellbeing where we reduce unemployment, fight poverty, and secure gender equality.”
Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Teresa Ribera, European Parliament President David Sassoli, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit, Portuguese Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security Ana Mendes Godinho, ETUC General Secretary Luca Visentini, PES President Sergei Stanishev, S&D President Iratxe García Pérez and many others will take part in the event.
More information about the event can be found on the S&D Group website.
