Following the conclusion of trilogues on the CAP reform, agriculture ministers from the PES met in Luxembourg to exchange on the provisional agreement that was reached during the last super trilogue.
Meeting Chair, Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development, Romain Schneider, said:
“We want to see a successful outcome on the CAP reform. Thanks to the Portuguese Council Presidency we have come a long way and we are close to securing a deal which is good for the environment and for farmers.
“Socialists will continue to press for a CAP that contributes to the objectives of the Green Deal. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting and restoring biodiversity, and ensuring our environment remains healthy are priorities for socialists and democrats.
“A successful deal is also one which supports our farmers, ensuring that payments are distributed in a fair manner. Through the CAP, we must provide stability and a strong, green, future for European agriculture.”
At their last meeting in April, PES ministers again made the case for CAP reform as a driver for a greener and socially fair future for Europe.
MEPs and national ministers will resume talks on the CAP later today in Luxembourg. Thanks to the continued hard work of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU, real progress is being made. With the European Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans leading the way on the European Green Deal, progressives are working hard to ensure a more sustainable and resilient future, also for the agricultural sector.
