A greener and healthier future for the planet and for the people is now one step closer as the European Parliament voted in favour of Nature Restoration Law today. The Law, set in motion by the Socialists and Democrats aims to better protect nature and was adopted despite the EPP’s cynical opposition. The law is an important part of the PES-led European Green Deal and a landmark piece of legislation that will preserve Europe’s biodiversity and the environment. 329 members of the European Parliament voted in favour of the Nature Restoration Law, a great victory for our progressive family.
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:
“This is great news for the future of our planet and our children. Europe finally commits itself to binding legislation to preserve Europe’s biodiversity, and to protect European farmers and food security from the effects of climate change. Yet a majority of the EPP group have decided to boycott the law, siding with the far-right, based on cynical electoral calculations. I welcome the courage of those who haven’t, and we commend rapporteur César Luena for working hard to find difficult compromises. This is a big success for our political family”.
The law can now be discussed with the European Commission and the European Council for final agreement before its implementation.
The PES is proud to send a strong signal that the European Green Deal and a just transition to a sustainable economy are essential for our future. This will be our clear position throughout the campaign in the runup to the European Elections in June and we are sure that voters will reward it.
The PES will always be at the forefront of the fight for the planet and the green transition, making sure that no one is left behind.
