Teresa Ribera has the vision to lead Europe towards a clean, just and prosperous future – this was clear from her performance in the European Parliament, the Party of European Socialists said today.
Spain’s Third Vice-President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge – nominated for the European Commission by Spain’s PSOE-led government – faced questions from Members of the European Parliament during the hearing stage of the formation of the European Commission for 2024-2029.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“I congratulate Teresa Ribera on her strong performance during today’s hearing. She demonstrated what we in the PES family already know – she is the perfect figure to oversee Europe’s path to a clean, just and prosperous future.
“As Executive Vice-President of the Commission, she will keep Europe true to its environmental commitments, delivering them in a fair way. She will ensure a European Green Deal with a red heart, delivered by driving world-leading innovation to ensure European industry is competitive in the global marketplace.”
A Just Transition delivered through decarbonisation, a circular economy and growth anchored in the European Green Deal; competition policy that progresses our green goals through a Clean Industrial Deal and better State Aid rules; action to cut energy bills and address energy poverty; better taxation; investment through the Social Climate Fund and Just Transition Fund; biodiversity protection; support for small and medium businesses; the European Competitiveness Fund; more effective enforcement of competitive rules, and other actions – these are the areas Teresa Ribera will lead as Executive Vice-President of the Commission for a Clea, Just and Competitive Transition.
The European Green Deal – the brainchild of the progressive Executive Vice-President of the European Commission under the last mandate, Frans Timmermans – remains a central priority for the socialist and democratic family. In the PES manifesto for the 2024 European elections, a New Green Deal for a Just Transition was a key focus alongside efforts for a strong and open European economy in the world.
