Its aim was to raise awareness on early signs of domestic abuse and to prevent it. PES women president Zita Gurmai urged European action on the issue, stating that “European Commissioner Reding, in charge of gender equality, must now show her real commitment to combat violence against women across Europe. European women and men do not want to wait longer to fall victim, they expect concrete actions!”
PES Women demands a European Year targeted on ending violence against women, as well as a comprehensive strategy on addressing violence against women.
Ms. Gurmai noted that the figures are still worrying about domestic violence in Europe. Over the last year 14% of women and 10% of men between the ages of 18 and 34 have been victims of domestic abuse In the 18 to 24 age group, the figure for women rises to 22%.
