PES Women President, Zita Gurmai, opened the event by underlining the importance of closing the gender pay gap; “It is unacceptable that, in a progressive continent like Europe, women still don’t make as much as men for the same work. There is still a difference of over 16% and we must push for common targets and make specific demands on a European level to combat this,” she stated. “It´s time for change in Europe – so line up for action and we will win these elections and make sure that Europe leans to the left again.”
Before the Conference, a PES Women statutory meeting was held where recent campaign developments were discussed as well as the upcoming PES Election Congress. PES Women also adopted a Resolution: “Solidarity between European women to ensure Sexual and Reproductive Rights for all Women.” Read the full resolution here.
After the Conference ended, the participants gathered together with hundreds of PES Women activists at the Piazza di Pietra square in central Rome in a flash mob to showcase their call to eliminate the gender pay gap across Europe.
