“700,000 Romanians are without a job. Hard-working citizens often cannot live on their wages due to pay cuts,” Schulz stated at the PSD European Campaign launch, “As Commission President my first priority will be decent jobs, with a special focus on youth unemployment. Instead of blocking growth and job creation in countries in need, we have to help them. We have to allow them to increase investment rates and to grow out of the crisis.”
PES President Sergei Stanishev and PSD lead MEP candidate Corina Cretu also spoke at the rally. Schulz arrived in Romania along with Stanishev after attending a BSP campaign rally in Bulgaria the previous day with 4,000 party supporters. “It was great to see the sheer excitement of activists in both countries over the last two days. The concept of a ‘common candidate ‘ for Commission President, and particularly the qualities that people see in Martin Schulz is bringing real engagement”, Stanishev stated after the event.
PSD has a strong European candidate list with MEP Corina Cretu in the lead. PSD grassroots activists have been one of the driving forces behind the PES’s #knockthevote campaign which is a pan-European movement to mobilise voters ahead of the elections on 22-25 May. 6,000 activists have been trained in Romania to carry out door-to-door canvassing.
Martin Schulz is on an extensive tour of European towns and cities as part of the PES election campaign. Details of the events can be found on his dedicated campaign website www.martin-schulz.eu.
Earlier, Mr. Schulz spent the day visiting a cutting edge laser technology project outside the city. Said Schulz, “This technology illustrates the vital role of new industrialisation in bringing quality job creation back to the EU”.
