PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“We congratulate António Costa and the PS on their impressive victory. Voters have delivered a clear verdict that they want António and his socialist government to continue leading the country. With this result, PS can ensure stability and certainty.
“This election victory demonstrates once again that citizens want sustainability and social justice, and a fair recovery from the pandemic. António is the right leader to deliver this, always listening to the Portuguese people and working to promote consensus in parliament.”
Creating more and better jobs, the unemployment rate cut in half, a just transition to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050, more renewable energy, improving wages and pensions for all, free access to early childhood education and care for vulnerable children, 440,000 fewer people at risk of poverty and social exclusion – the record of PS Portugal shows how socialists and social democrats are transforming societies for the better.
PS took almost 42% of the vote at the general election and are expected to get 117 seats in the new parliament.
