Berlusconi, speaking at his party’s campaign launch again referred to his comments ten years ago, when he described Martin Schulz as ‘ good for a role as a concentration camp guard’. This time he went even further by saying that ‘the Germans, for them, the concentration camps never existed’.
Speaking from Bucharest today, Mr. Stanishev said that “these comments by Berlusconi are an insult to the entire German people and not only an insult to Martin Schulz. Moreover, they are a cynical attempt to distract from the real issues in this election like the need for more jobs and growth in Europe.”
Stanishev called on Angela Merkel and the leaders of the EPP, including common candidate Juncker to immediately condemn the ‘ despicable’ remarks and distance themselves from the comments.
At the EPP Congress in Dublin in March, Berlusconi was one of the key backers of Mr. Juncker’s successful bid to become common candidate.
