PES welcomes Vasco Alves Cordeiro as new Committee of the Regions President

During its 150th Plenary in Brussels, Belgium, today, CoR members elected Cordeiro President for a two-and-a-half-year term.

The socialist from the Azores – one of Europe’s outermost regions – will lead the organisation bringing together local and regional representatives from across the European Union.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“The PES family sends its warm congratulations to Vasco Alves Cordeiro on his election. He brings his experience from one of the farthest corners of our Union to the very centre of EU decision making. We are proud that a socialist is once again leading the Committee of the Regions.

“Our political family understands the vital role of local and regional elected representatives, and I know that the Committee of the Regions will be strengthened by President Cordeiro. He is a grassroots campaigner, a proud European and a champion of local and regional government. We look forward to progressing our common agenda for a green transition that leaves no one behind, and fairer and more just Europe for all.”

Cordeiro was President of the Regional Government of the Azores from 2012 until 2020. He has been a member of the CoR since 2013, and First Vice-President of the CoR since 2020.
