PSOE highlights its European dimension at 40th congress

Under the slogan Avanzamos (we move forward), the Congress saw PSOE outline its new political project based on three main pillars: the redefinition of the concept of social justice to include redistribution and pre-distribution of wealth and opportunities, the reaffirmation of PSOE’s commitment to socialist values, and a change in the way we understand politics and reforms.

The PES congratulates Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for his re-election as PSOE Secretary General, as well as MP Adriana Lastra as Deputy Secretary General, and PES First Vice-President Iratxe Garcia on her re-election as PSOE EU Affairs Secretary.

The Congress further promoted PSOE’s core values of equality, with numerous debates and events promoting feminism, freedom and equal rights for the LGBTI community, and environmental sustainably. PSOE offset the carbon emissions from this large-scale event, involving thousands of participants, by planting 2500 trees in Avila, Spain.

The PES supported the Congress with several activities, including being present at two debates: a Dialogue on the Conference of the Future of Europe with PES Activists, with S&D President Iratxe Garcia and MEPs; and a high-level debate on European affairs – “We move forward with Europe” – with Joaquín Almunia (former EU Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Competition), José Manuel Albares (Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain) and Iratxe García (S&D President and MEP), moderated by MEP and PES Presidency Member Javier López. The PES also held a permanent stand at the event which informed hundreds of people about our activities at European level. PES member party representatives were also present.

The PES would like to thank the PES Activists who volunteered at the PES stand and promoted our work, as well as all the people who visited the stand and events, including S&D President Iratxe Garcia, MEP Javier Moreno, head of the Spanish delegation in S&D, and MEPs Lina Galvez, Alicia Homs, and Isabel Garcia Muñoz, amongst many others.
