The Party of European Socialists (PES) is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday night. The PES sends its condolences to all the victims of the disaster.

PES Vice President Kati Piri said:

“Our thoughts are with the Moroccan people at this incredibly difficult time. I praise the bravery of all the citizens and first responders who continue to work tirelessly to rescue survivors. Now is the moment to do everything possible to support them. Saving lives must be the priority.

“I welcome the life-saving emergency assistance that has already been mobilised and committed by international partners, which will hopefully be accepted in full by the Moroccan authorities. Alongside this immediate support, I underline the importance of assisting the reconstruction efforts. We must stand in solidarity with the Moroccan people in this time of need.”

Rescuers continue to search for survivors in the villages in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains – where the earthquake hit – and other affected areas. The European Union has already indicated that it stands ready to provide assistance, with Spain dispatching rescue teams to the affected areas over the weekend.

According to Moroccan public television, more than 18,000 families have been “affected” by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Al-Haouz – the site of its epicentre, approximately 71km south-west of Marrakesh. At least 2,250 people are reported to have died.
