After voting in favour of the resolution at the European Parliament, the PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “I supported the PNR directive because European socialists have always seen the PNR as an important tool to fight organised crime and terrorism. But we are as concerned about compliance with fundamental freedoms and personal data protection. Now our voice has finally been heard and we have made sure that we have an adequate balance”.
Stanishev said: “The PNR alone will not solve all of our security problems. However, it is a positive first step towards enhanced investigative and intelligence cooperation between European Member States. A successful and more effective exchange of information between the national security agencies is needed now more than ever. But the PES is clearly saying NO to massive surveillance of EU citizens. We support targeted, risk-based use of passenger data”.
