The Party of European Socialists (PES) condemns the large-scale surprise attacks on Israel on Saturday by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

PES President Stefan Löfven said:

“Today we send solidarity to all Israelis. We condemn this large-scale, indiscriminate, assault on citizens and communities. This violence is a serious escalation. What we are witnessing is extremely shocking and we call on Hamas to stop the attacks immediately. Terrorism is never the answer.”

The surprise attack – which comes at the end of the Jewish Sukkot holiday – began on Saturday morning when militants fired 2,500 rocks at Israel, followed by attacks from gunmen in the Gaza Strip. Local hospitals are already treating hundreds of casualties of the violence.
