The Party of European Socialists (PES) commends EU delegations around the world for their continued service to uphold our values, especially today on this important day for the history of the European Union. The PES fully supports the decision of the EU Delegation to Israel to not offer a platform to those who stand in opposition to EU values.

Speaking at a progressive meeting in Berlin, PES Executive Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:

“For over 70 years, Europe has had as her essential aim the service of peace. In Europe and around the world, we must always stand in support of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights. This was the message the PES sent to Israel earlier this year when we travelled there to support those opposing far-right judicial reforms and it is the message we proudly send on European Day too.”

PES Executive Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck is joined in Berlin by PES Secretary General Achim Post and PES Deputy Secretary General Saar van Bueren for a Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) conference. The event hosts an exchange with European and international partners on combatting the political challenges and threats to democracy posed by nationalist and radical right-wing parties all over the world.

In March, MEP Evin Incir and PES Executive Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck travelled to Israel to visit PES observer member parties – the Israeli Labor Party and the Meretz Party – and show solidarity with progressives, who were demonstrating against far-right government reforms
