PES President Sergei Stanishev stated that “Today’s seminar was a huge success. This is a very important topic to focus on because a Constitution touches the lives of every citizen and will for decades after it is formulated.”
He continued that “One size will not fit all in a Constitution and today we discussed the different components that can be found in a Constitution. We as socialists and social democrats have a clear vision of what democracy is: it must ensure equality between citizens, equality between women and men, clear separation of powers and checks and balances. The Constitution is a framework and we will work with and support our sister parties to ensure a proper implementation in order to develop true democratic societies.”
The PES has been actively engaged with our partners from the region since the beginning of the Arab Spring last year, organizing two Conferences in Tunis and establishing a Task Force on the Arab Spring. In the coming months there will be a seminar on an Arab economic and social development plan and in the fall there will be another Conference organized in the region.
