Ahead of crucial presidential and parliamentary elections in the coming weeks in Romania, the Party of European Socialists (PES) sends a strong message of support to its full member party Partidul Social Democrat (PSD) and its leader Marcel Ciolacu. European Socialists and Democrats strongly believe in the successes of their Romanian partners.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Marcel, you and the entire PSD have worked tirelessly to promote social progress, uphold the rule of law and ensure stability in the region. You have successfully kept the destructive far right forces in Romania at bay and you are an important leader of our social democratic family in Europe.
“For these reasons, I am delighted to extend the PES support for your candidacy for President of Romania. I believe in your success in the election, and I wish your work to take Romania forward on its path towards increased progress and prosperity for all to continue from the position of the country’s president. I believe in the good result of the PSD in the general election as well.”
On 24 November, Romanian voters will head to the polls for the first round of the presidential elections. On 1 December, they will elect a new Romanian parliament – 330 members of the Chamber of Deputies as well as 136 members of the Senate.
Marcel Ciolacu – leader of PSD since 2019 and Prime Minister of Romania since 2023 – is the PSD candidate for President of Romania. Polling puts PSD – currently the largest party in the Romanian parliament with 103 Deputies and 49 Senators – in first place.
The whole PES Family wishes them luck.
