Genval Declaration – S&D and PES commit to fairer, safer and stronger Union

As the European Union faces multiple threats from inside and out, key figures from the Party of European Socialists joined the S&D Bureau away day in Genval in support of the S&D Declaration ‘To build a better future for all – together for a better future’.
The declaration comes in response to a feeling of increased vulnerability in European security in several areas. On The EU’s eastern border, the ongoing threat of Russian aggression continues to linger, and on social media tech oligarchs continue to peddle disinformation which puts our democracies in peril, fanning the flames of the populist fire which burns across European democracies.
The declaration sets out three main objectives among others:

  • To protect citizens and the rule of law
  • To promote our socioecological model and jobs
  • Significant investment in our industries based on our European social model

In attendance from the PES were President Stefan Löfven, Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck, Deputy Secretary General Saar van Bueren, and Deputy Secretary General Yonnec Polet.

This declaration represents a stepping stone in improving European security: ensuring that we can protect our citizens from those who wish to threaten our democracy and the rule of law on which our society is founded.

Security is not just about building the necessary defence capabilities but also about defending our European social model, securing quality jobs, fair wages, decent housing and high-quality healthcare while preserving our planet.

The PES looks forward to further collaboration with the Socialists and Democrats in this mandate. Together, we will continue to represent citizens at the European level and ensure that we deliver on our commitments.
