The Party of European Socialists (PES) backs Glenn Micallef to lead EU efforts to progress intergenerational fairness, support youth, promote culture and champion sport across the EU.
Nominated by Malta’s Labour-led government, former EU Adviser Micallef demonstrated his clear ability to oversee the central portfolio – covering culture, community and the next generation – at a hearing in the European Parliament.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Enhancing social wellbeing is so important. It has been a priority for our political family and we are reassured to see that this work will be prioritised in the next European Commission. Glenn Micallef is the right candidate to entrust this important mission to.
“One of the youngest Commissioners-designate in EU history, Glenn Micallef knows the EU well and will bring fresh thinking to these important policy portfolios. We look forward to working with him to strengthen social wellbeing across our Union.”
A Strategy for Intergenerational Fairness to ensure that today’s decisions support future generations; Youth Policy Dialogues building on the work of the European Year of Youth; a Youth Advisory Board; an action plan against cyberbullying and the EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child; a new Culture Compass; support for artists and the cultural professionals; a new strategy to strengthen the European Sport Model; updating the Council Recommendation on Health Enhancing Physical Activity; and other actions – these are the key proposals and action that will be overseen by Glenn Micallef as European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport.
