The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates Magdalena Andersson and the Swedish Social Democrats on their election victory, which puts them in a strong position to lead Sweden’s next government.
The Social Democrats have once again emerged as Sweden’s largest political force. Together with the victory of the progressive bloc, Swedish voters have opened the way for a change of direction and for Magdalena Andersson to lead the country towards a fairer, stronger and more united future.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“I warmly congratulate Magdalena and all our Swedish comrades on this important victory. Swedish voters have chosen a progressive way forward, based on a strong welfare state, social justice and a society that brings people together.
The negotiations to form a new government will not be easy. Building the necessary support will require dialogue and compromise. Magdalena will stand firm on our fundamental values: equality, solidarity and the equal worth of every person. Sweden now has an opportunity to turn the page on four years in which the far right has had a strong influence on the direction of government.
This victory also matters for Europe. At a time of growing economic, social and security challenges, we need governments that can combine competitiveness and security with social justice and cooperation. Under Magdalena’s leadership, Sweden can be a strong progressive voice and contribute to building a stronger and fairer European Union.”
The result gives Sweden the opportunity to turn the page after four years of conservative-led government and put progressive priorities back at the heart of government.
It also represents a setback for the far right. After four years of the Sweden Democrats providing parliamentary support to the conservative-led government, Swedish voters have strengthened the progressive alternative and opened the way for a different direction for the country.
Beyond Sweden, this victory carries a wider European message: credible leadership and concrete answers to people’s concerns – from the cost of living and quality public services to security, jobs and the green transition – are the way forward.
The PES stands firmly alongside Magdalena Andersson and the Swedish Social Democrats as they take the next steps towards forming a progressive government.
Congratulations, Magdalena. We look forward to working together for a stronger and fairer Sweden and Europe.
