This summer, Spain will decide its political colour. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will go into that election with a clear progressive programme for a more just, more sustainable and more prosperous country.
Commenting on the snap election called in Spain, PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Pedro Sánchez and PSOE understand what is at stake and this general election shows they are ready for the fight. The choice now facing Spanish voters is very simple. A progressive, pro-European, pro-climate action agenda on one side, and a lurch to the right on the other side. From strengthening women’s rights, to more social housing, to protecting the climate, and so much more, Pedro Sánchez has delivered as prime minister. A centre-right government propped up by the far-right would put all this progress in jeopardy.
“It is worrying that conservatives in Europe continue to demonstrate that they are comfortable doing deals with the far-right. We have seen this in Italy, Finland and my native Sweden. Voters need to know that this strategy is always on the table with conservatives.”
Since coming to power in 2018, Prime Minister Sánchez has confidently steered Spain through the pandemic and built a strong recovery. Earlier this year, unemployment in Spain hit its lowest rate in 15 years. Prime Minister Sánchez has championed women’s rights, recently announcing a gender parity law. His government has put forward 4 billion euros for 43,000 more affordable homes, and introduced emergency measures to help people with energy prices. He has stood firm against attempts to exploit and damage Spain’s natural environment and has worked to ensure a just transition to a greener future.
